Above images: 'Cymatics – The Structure and Dynamics of Waves and Vibrations'. Some years a back I remember being drawn to fine circular geometric patterns being formed in a glass of water on a table in a room resonating to the bassline of a Roland TB-303 Synth. Using an oscillator to generate different frequencies, he transformed the vibrating sand into beautiful and symmetrical patterns. However, I argue that what is still somewhat off limits in the field is a consideration of the ontological status of sound: in other words, what it means to understand our own being in the world as a sonic phenomenon. Cymatics: A Study of Wave Phenomenon & Vibration. New Market, NH: MACROmedia Publishing, 2001. But are our ears the only way to sense sound? Out of attempts to approach this sonic ontology, comes the realization that there are prohibitions, perhaps universal ones, on thinking about sound in this way, and from that emerges what I call the politics of vibration. More about sound as a way to generate moving image and visual patterns which led me to the term Cymatics (from Greek: κῦμα “wave”) Cymatics is the study of visible sound and vibration, a subset of modal phenomena. How far can artistic investigation into Cymatics – the study of wave phenomenon and vibration – contribute towards a deeper understanding of the interplay between sound and image in Visual Music? Volume 1, 1967 The structure and dynamics of waves and vibrations. It is typically associated Hans Jenny, a Swiss doctor, in 1967 published a book called Cymatics - The Structure and Dynamics of Waves and Vibrations. We can feel vibrations in the form of low rumbles, but this does not come close to the fidelity Works Cited. Cymatics is the study of wave phenomena. Our awareness of auditory phenomenon is just the compression and decompression of air waves pushing into our ear canals, but the precise quality of our experience is created by our brain. Hans Jenny pioneered the study of wave phenomena, and named the art/science Cymatics – derived from the Greek Kyma or kymatika meaning matters pertaining to waves. Wow, that phenomena link is pretty trippy.
