I would suggest Stroustrup's "Programming -- Principles and Practice Using C++". You don't have to turn every product into “everything for everybody” !! The fact is that it never left. Thus, you have the possibility for more performant code in C++, though in practice most people don't take advantage of those features and C and C++ end up benchmarking at essentially the same speed.
